Welcome to Mrs. Teal’s 5th Grade Class!

Hello! My name is Charity Teal and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to be working with you and your 5th grader this school year. I was born and raised next door, in Buffalo. From there, I went to Oklahoma State University where I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. While teaching in Stillwater, I met and soon married my next door neighbor, Roger. Fast forward a few years, and we returned to my “home” to farm and ranch. We have lived in Laverne for 13 years. During these years, our family grew from 2 to 6! This year marks my 8th year teaching at Laverne Elementary. Fifth graders are the greatest!

I believe that you, as parents, are a very important part of your child’s education. I look forward to working with you to make 5th grade a successful and memorable year for your child. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Things you may want to know about 5th grade:

  • Girls and boys go to their PE hour separately and will have the opportunity to compete in Cross Country, Football, Basketball, and Track with the 6th grade students. They will need to bring a change of clothes. Also they will run, sweat, and work very hard. They need to bring and wear deodorant please. They are also encouraged to keep a water bottle at school.
  • Students will attend band class where they will choose an instrument to learn to play. Enjoy the practice time at home, whether it be a drum beat or a squeaky clarinet. I will do my part by listening to the constant pencil “drummers” on the desks.
  • Students can choose to try out for the 5th and 6th grade academic team midway through the year. The students that make the team usually attend 3 or 4 meets during the year.
  • 5th grade in Laverne is self-contained, meaning I will teach your child all of the core subjects (other than girls’ science, due to PE class).
  • In April, all 5th grade students have state mandated tests in the areas of Math, Reading, Writing, and Science. This year testing will be all online.

Chromebooks:

Each student is assigned a Chromebook to use during the school year. It stays in the classroom and is not allowed to go home. Students are required to follow all school and classroom internet and technology policies. If students do not, they will lose the privilege of the Chromebook and will be put on a desktop where I can monitor all of their usage at all times.

Homework:

Homework will vary from day to day and be dependent on your child’s time management in the classroom. Typically, they will have time to complete all work in class. Your child is expected to turn in all work in a timely manner. Late work will be deducted 10 points. After one week, it’s a zero.

Absences:

If your child knows he/she is going to be absent, it is the responsibility of the student to let me know ahead of time and get their school work so it can be completed upon their return. If your child is sick, please text me or call the office and let me know. I can have their work by lunch or the end of the day to be picked up. If the absence is for one day only, they can get their work the next day. Students are expected to complete absent work in a timely manner.

If you need to check out your child early, you need to first go to the office and sign them out. At that time, they will call to the classroom for your child. Pay attention to times your child is at band or PE as it will require more time to get your child.

Reading/ ILit

Our reading program in online through a program called ILit. Most reading assignments will be completed on this program online and you will not receive papers home as they are not printed off. If you’d like to see their work and scores, you can access your student’s account through:

Grades:

I do my best to keep grades up to date in our online gradebook. www.laverne.k12.ok.us –gradebook

Your login is the same every year.  If you need another copy of your login and password, please visit the high school office and they will be happy to help you!

Friday Folders:

On Fridays, I will be sending home a folder to keep you informed of your child’s work. This is the only day of the week students typically bring papers home. The folder will contain graded papers and any other important notes that you need to be aware. Please keep all of the work and papers and return the empty folder back to school on Monday morning.

Class Parties:

We have 4 holiday parties in 5th grade—Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Easter. Party times generally will be from 2:50-3:25 in our classroom. You are asked to sign your name for two events. You are welcome to attend and help with any and all!
